Early Childhood Development in Humanitarian Action

Young children who experience extreme stress in their early years are at greater risk for developing cognitive, behavioural and emotional difficulties, which also reduces and delays their overall developmental processes. Very young children are particularly vulnerable in situations of crisis, instability and violence. The formative years from birth to age 6 (particularly in the 0-2 years age group) play a vital role in the formation of intelligence, personality and social behaviour. In their early years, children encounter some of life's most significant learning experiences and they develop competencies that are the underpinning of all later learning. Good health and nutrition support the psychological and social development of the young child. Likewise, social interaction satisfies the child's need to grow socially, emotionally and cognitively has a measurable impact on its health, nutrition and later learning capacity.

The ECD Kit is a package containing early-learning, play, and psychosocial materials that address the developmental progress of children from birth to age six. The kit can serve a group of approximately 50 children at one time. Most of the kit materials can be used for many years and those materials that need replacement can be ordered on line. The kit has been made as gender and culturally neutral as possible (no items are attributed to boys or girls exclusively, and all are widely accepted). The kit is complementary to the "School in a Box" and the "Recreation Kit." It can be used in a rapid education response but is in no way intended to replace formal school.

HR

  • Clarify the responsibilities of UNICEF and its partners regarding education in humanitarian situations.
  • Strengthen existing coordination mechanisms or, if unavailable, mechanisms in collaboration with national authorities to ensure that the humanitarian response is timely and coordinated, and that conforms to humanitarian principles and agreed-upon standards and benchmarks.

    Support a multi-sectoral rapid assessment mechanism and format, including priority education information.
